They needed a website that could keep track of what beer was on tap, what had been kicked, and what was on deck. I created a WordPress template featuring an editable dinner menu, a complete list of bottled beer, and a list of taps that can be updated before you can put down a pint. Belgian lovers rejoice!

Stefan Sagmeister issued a design challenge to the students at RIT, “Touch someone’s heart with design.”

I chose to focus on how design change from something static to something that motivates someone to take action. I began by asking, “When do touching moments occur?” The answers I kept coming back to were 1) when we step out of our normal routine and 2) when we do things for others.

My project is a series of twelve clocks mounted on a large board. Instead of hands, each clock has a disk with a slit cut into it. Every five minutes one of the clocks reveals a message that asks the viewer to pause what they’re doing to spend time doing something for themselves or someone else.

I started this project because I wanted to watch letters slowly degrade, and bitmap fonts seemed like an obvious choice. I started by mapping each letter to a function that would display it’s pixel version. But once I got going with creating words and sentences and adding simple kerning, I realized I was actually creating a rudimentary text editor.

The website came along as a way to allow anyone to join in and destroy a few words of their own. A series of variables allow users to control the rate, distance, and size of the destruction.

This project uses Processing to map music’s audio frequency to a grid. Based on how much any part of the frequency changes determines how quickly that portion of the grid rotates through a series of images.

The resulting images are show to the left. Click on the link below to see movies of how they were made.

This was video was created for a dynamic typography class at RIT.

The assignment was to animate type to a dialogue. I chose this piece of audio from The Office because each of the characters has a unique manner of speaking that I felt would translate nicely as pure typography. And because it included Violent Andy. We all miss Violent Andy.
